America's Homeless
(Oil:24x36)
America's Homeless

I was thinking of the many homeless people across the nation after having a conversation with one at the local Post Office lobby early one morning. I began to wonder if there were earlier photos of homeless. I searched until I came across a photo of two men during the Great Depression of the early twentieth century. One of the men in the photo stayed in my mind because of his position while he slept on the concrete and it resulted in this painting. While painting the man in the setting of my mind's eye, I happened to come across a televised news program of homeless individuals. During the news program, a homeless man was filmed in a similar position wearing a baseball cap, lying on a concrete sidewalk adjacent to a park. The two men were similar yet of different times.
